The roads of Christmas Island
Nearly every road on Christmas Island were originally a mine access tracks, as such, they are all phosphate roads, and they go down the side of amazing hills. As an example, the photo to the right shows an access road down to a mine field that was first mined in the 1970's. It starts at about 300 meters above sea level and goes down to about 30 meters above sea level, and its just amazing, 40 years of growth of the jungle had left this amazing tunnel through the jungle, this photo was taken while we returned up the hill, and while not apparent on the right is a cliff, and on the left a very steep drop down to the mine site.
